Frequently Asked Questions

Bandwidth

What is bandwidth?
The amount of information that can be sent/received over a network. Information includes anything from a web page to an e-mail to an image...anything that travels on a network, including the Internet.
Why must ResNet limit bandwidth usage?
The residential network is for academic use and we shape the bandwidth based on this. For example, you can surf the Internet and use e-mail faster than you can use a peer-to-peer (P2P) program to download files because the Internet and e-mail are used for academic pursuits and file sharing over LimeWire, for example, is not.
Are users ever deactivated because of excessive use of bandwidth?
If a ResNet user is using an excessive amount of bandwidth we may disconnect their service until the behavior is corrected. If the excessive use is due to a virus, we must remove it and verify the machine is clean in our office before it will be reconnected to the network.
What connection speed does ResNet have to the Internet?
10Mbps. Remember though that this is a shared resource so if others on your floor are hogging all the bandwidth, it will affect your connection speed.
Does some traffic have higher priority than others?
Yes. We use packet shaping to ensure the proper academic use of our residential network.

Cisco Clean Access - General

What is Clean Access?
This is a network solution from Cisco that performs validation to ensure validation of computers connecting to a network and ensures that those computers meets the minimum security standards.
Do I have to use Cisco Clean Access (CCA)?
Yes. All Windows (XP and Vista) and Macintosh OS X 10.5 PCs are required to use Cisco Clean Access agent for network access. If you try to circumvent its proper use you could be banned from the residential network. NOTE: Other versions of Windows and Macintosh OS X will not work with Clean Access.
Why did we do this?
In the Fall 2003 the residential network was crippled by viruses and worms because user computers lacked any or up-to-date virus protection and important Windows updates and service packs. During that academic year and the summer of 2004 we worked to get a free antivirus for our students and a system to check each PC to ensure security for all users. What came out of all that was Cisco Clean Access (previously known as Perfigo Smart Enforcer).
Am I required to install any software on my computer?
All Microsoft Windows (XP and Vista) and Macintosh OS X 10.5 computers are required to install Cisco Clean Access client, Microsoft critical updates and patches and EKU's Symantec Antivirus software to gain access to the residential network (ResNet).
Why am I required to use EKU's version of Symantec?
This specific edition is maintained locally by EKU servers, ensuring that the latest definitions are present and that the software has not been uninstalled or otherwise disabled as long at the computer is connected to the residential network.

It is free to all EKU students and should be uninstalled (password: symantec) when you are no longer a student at EKU.

What about Xboxes and PlayStations and Wiis?
The registration process for these devices are different. Simply bring your game console MAC address to the ResNet office to register these.
How do I know Cisco Clean Access Agent is running?
Look in the system tray for the icon in the lower right corner near the time display. (You may need to select the '<' to expand the list to show the icon.)
I do not see the icon on my system tray, what do I do?
There are a few possibilities:
*CCA has not been installed. Install it to continue.
*CCA is hidden in the system tray. Click on the "<" to expand the system tray list and show the icon.
*CCA is installed but not running. From the Start menu, choose All Programs, Cisco Systems, Cisco Clean Access, and click Clean Access.
*Your computer has a problem showing Systray icons. You may be able to use "Task Manager" to halt CCA and then launch it again. Start> Run. Type "taskmgr" and click OK. Look for "CCAAgent.exe." If you see it, click it once and click "End Task" then relaunch it from the Start Menu.
*CCA has been installed but you did not select "Launch" at the end of the installation. Start Menu>Programs>Cisco>Clean Access Agent. Click "Clean Access Agent" to launch the program
I have a router in my room and cannot connect to it.
Routers (and all other networking devices) are prohibited on the residential network.
Does this protect against spyware?
CCA does not protect against spyware. However CCA will ensure that when you connect to the Internet, your computer is up to date and protected. For spyware protection we recommend downloading SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and CCleaner. See our downloads page.

EKU does have an appliance on the network to help counter malware, however.

Cisco Clean Access - Installation

How do I install CCA?
It is very easy to install. You will first need to download the installation file once you connect to the residential network. Once installation is finished, the Agent will popup and ask you to log in.
Will this work for Windows 95 or 98 or NT or Me or 2000 or Mac OS X versions before 10.5?
We no longer support these operating systems because CCA Agent will work with them.
Will CCA change settings on my computer?
The Agent is an unobtrusive program that communicates exclusively with EKU's CCA servers to ensure that your computer is protected from malicious software. The CCA will not alter any settings on your computer, and will not interfere with normal functionality.

Cisco Clean Access - Login/Logoff Process

Why doesn't the Clean Access Agent remember my username and password when I check the "Remember Me" box?
As a security precaution, Cisco designed the Clean Access Agent to store the user data in memory (RAM) and not on the hard drive. Therefore when you exit the agent, restart, or shut down your computer all data in memory is removed.
When and how often do I have to login?
You will be logged off the network automatically if you become disconnected from the network.
How will I know when I am logged out of the network for revalidation?
If you choose to Logout from the Cisco Clean Access Agent, you expire your login session. Other indications are things such as your browser is redirected to the login page, instant messaging fails or suddenly stops working; or e-mails fail to send or receive.
How do I tell if I am already logged in?
The best way is to try to go to an external Internet site. In most cases, if you are able to access a site such as www.webmd.com you are online and logged in. If not, you will be redirected to the page to download Clean Access again.
How do I log out?
Currently, the only way to manually logout is to use the Cisco Clean Access Agent logout feature. Right-click the CCA icon in the system tray and choose Logout.
How do I tell if I am unauthenticated or quarantined?
The best way is to try to go to an external Internet site. If you are unable to access a site such as www.webmd.com you are unauthenticated or might be quarantined.
I use a personal firewall, will this cause a problem?
Usually no but if you get a popup window regarding CCA you should allow it to move through the firewall.
How can I see if the popup windows is set to popup?
Right-click the CCA icon on the taskbar (by the clock) and be sure "Popup Login Window" is checked.

Cisco Clean Access - Non-Microsoft Operating Systems

How does validation work for Macintosh users?
There is a Cisco Clean Access client for Macintosh OS X 10.5 now and you must use it to validate your computer on the network. No other versions of the Macintosh OS will work with Clean Access.
How does validation work for other non-Window/non-Macintosh users?
They need to authenticate by logging in via a web page.
What web page do I login to on my Linux machine?
Try surfing to a site like www.webmd.com. You will be redirected to the login page if it is time to login again.

Cisco Clean Access - Removal

What if I am no longer using ResNet?
If you are just going home for a break or the summer, you will not notice CCA at all. If you are leaving ResNet for good you can uninstall it by first closing the program from your taskbar by right-clicking the icon and closing. Then go to Start> Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Select Clean Access Agent and click Remove.

Cisco Clean Access - Troubleshooting

I am NOT able to access the Internet but the Clean Access Agent only allows me to "logout." What's going on?
The Clean Access agent may not always detect your network status. Please choose "logout" and then choose "login."

Cisco Clean Access - Validation Process

How does validation work?
This process will redirect any Internet browser request to a web page that instructs the user to download and install the validation client known as "Cisco Clean Access Agent." Once installed and logged into, the client checks the system against validation rules. If the computer fails the test, it is allowed Internet access only to the remediation sites for a short period. Once corrected, full network access is provided.
What validation checks are being performed?
Cisco Clean Access checks for: (1) The current release of EKU's version of Symantec and current definitions; and (2) Current operating system service packs and critical updates.
How long do the validation checks take?
They normally take between 30 seconds and a few minutes.
How often will I be revalidated?
We have configured the validation time for two weeks. This means that all previously certified "Clean Machines" will need to be revalidated to ensure that all updates for the past week have been downloaded and installed.
What remediation is available?
Users can fail in three areas: *Authentication Failure. If the user's system fails authentication, the user is instructed to provide the correct e-key. If the user has forgotten they must reset it. You can also fail at this point if you have chosen the incorrect authentication server. *Antivirus Failure. If you are not running the EKU specific edition of Symantec Antivirus and if it is not updated, you will fail at this point. You must download it, remove any other antivirus programs you have, and install it. *Microsoft Windows Patch Failure. If the users system fails on a Windows update/service pack, you'll be redirected to the download site from Microsoft. You must use Internet Explore to use this site.
What happens if an "infected" system does get on the network?
The validation process can only be sure users have the latest fixes and tools at their disposal but we can't prevent all infections. Many viruses and most spyware are gotten by the user's actions and we don't control this. But if an "infected" system that is harmful to the network makes it's way on the network, it would be quarantined until fixed.
What happens when a new patch or updates are available?
As new operating system updates become available (usually once per month), the security requirements will be updated to reflect the new patches and at the end of the seven days during revalidation, user's will have to patch their system for further access.
When I run Windows updates, I get a message stating that the product key used to install Windows is invalid. Why?
Windows Update will fail if your Windows Operating System is not properly licensed. You must have a legal copy of the operating system to connect to the university network. Please contact Microsoft or your PC manufacturer with questions.
Will CCA monitor anything that I do online?
No. CCA only monitors the connection requirements--not your surfing habits.
What am I allowed to access when quarantined?
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Symantec
ResNet's websites
support.apple.com

What is copyright?
Basically it is the rights granted to use/own a creative or artistic work like a movie, sound recordings, paintings, photographs, designs, and software.
What is intellectual property?
Those are things covered by copyright, patens, trademarks, etc.
What does a copyright protect?
It protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. (Taken from:www.copyright.gov)
How long does a copyright last?
For works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first. For works first published prior to 1978, the term will vary depending on several factors. To determine the length of copyright protection for a particular work, consult chapter 3 of the Copyright Act (title 17 of the United States Code).(Taken from:www.copyright.gov)
What is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)?
Enacted in 1998 it is suppose to protect major software companies, as well as, people in the film and music industries
What is fair use?
Fair use is a difficult concept that doesn't have a lot of clear guidelines. The best rule is to just always get permission from the copyright holder before using something.

EKU E-mail

What are the names of the campus email servers?
POP3: stuowa.eku.edu SMTP: stuowa.eku.edu
NOTE: IF you live off-campus, substitute your ISP's SMTP for the one listed above.
What is my EKU student email account?
Your username is usually your first and last name, separated by an underscore (_). Sometimes there is a number at the end. It is up to 16 characters long. For example, Jane Doe might be (jane_doe112@eku.edu) or Christopher Broughton might be (christopher_bro4@eku.edu).
Where can I find policies for email and computer usage?
ITDS Code of Ethics for Computing and Communication
How do I get an EKU student email account?
Once you are accepted as an EKU student, you can activate you account here. NOTE: We highly suggest changing your initial password as soon as possible. See below.
How do I check my email account?
You can check your email account several ways. First you can use the web interface. Secondly you can setup an email client program (i.e., Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc) to check your email. The server name is: stuowa.eku.edu (for Outlook) and ekumail.eku.edu (all other clients)
What do I do about suspicious attachments?
The best rule of thumb is to NEVER open email attachments unless you are expecting an attachment and know that it is a clean file. Unless you know someone is sending you a file attachment, don't open it even if it is from a friend, your mom, your girlfriend, etc. EKU filters out suspicious attachments but the best thing to do is be safe, rather than sorry!
I can't seem to send/receive mail. What do I do?
Call us. If you are receiving an error message, write it down and then call us at 2-3050.
How do I forward my EKU email to another address?
At this moment you can't do this with your student email account.
How do I set up a vacation message/auto responder?
1. Login to the web interface
2. On the left, click "Options."
3. Under "Out of Office Assistant" check "I am currently out of the office" and in the box after "AutoReply only once to each sender with the following text:" type your away message. Many people leave a return date.
4. Click "Save and Close" at the top then "Logoff" the email account.
Can I change my email address?
No. This email address is randomly generated and unable to be changed. If you get married and your name changes, contact 622-3000.
Why is my email running slow for me?
This can be caused by several things. First, delete all the messages out of your "Sent" and "Deleted" folders. Next, clean up your "Inbox" and if you delete more messages, delete those from the deleted folder too. Remember you only have a 100MB mailbox but messages in those other folders count towards that number, not just what's in your "Inbox."

And sometimes you may just hit a lag in your connection and it may be ok at another time. Your greatest concern should be if you can't access your account at all.

Why can't I log into my email account?
Have you changed your password? Remember that these are only good for 180 days. Also, are you able to connect to the Internet at all? Be sure your problem isn't greater than your email account.
What happens to my email account when I graduate?
Currently your email account will be good for 6 months after you graduate. If you leave the university before you graduate, your student email account will be deleted in 30 days.
How do I send/receive email off-campus through my off-campus ISP?
You may use the web interface as long as you are connected to the Internet. If you're using an email client program, however, your "Incoming" server will be: ekumail.eku.edu and after "Outgoing" server you will need to type the SMTP for your current Internet provider.
What do I need to know about my email password?
1. Will expire in 180 days.
2. Must be at least 7 characters long.
3. When you change your password, it must be different from the previous one.
4. Your default is eku followed by your date of birth in the following format: ekuMMDDYY. MM=Two digit month DD=Two digit date and YY=Last two digits of the year. For example, if your birthday was April 12, 1985 your default email password would be: eku041285
I forgot my password/need it reset. What do I do?
You have two options. You can stop by our office in 230 Combs Classroom Building or Combs 207. Please bring a picture ID with you! NOTE: We can not take this via the telephone.
How do I change my password?
1. Login to the web interface.
2. On the left, click "Options."
3. Scroll down in the right window to "Password."
4. Click the "Change Password" button.
5. An "Internet Service Manager" box should appear Fill it in like so:
Domain: STUDENT
Account: YOUR USERNAME, in the example above,
john_doe
Old Password: Type your OLD PASSWORD
New Password: Type your NEW PASSWORD
Confirm new password: Type your NEW PASSWORD again.
6. Click the "Ok" button.
7. Click the "Save and Close" at the top of right email window.
8. Log off the account.
What is the mailbox size quota?
100MB. It is your responsibility to manage your messages and keep the size down to quota or below.
How do I attach a file?
In most e-mail programs, including webmail, there will be a paperclip icon at the top of the message window that you click to attach a file.
How do I save and open an attachment?
On some e-mail programs you simply click an attachment and it prompts you to save it. On other programs you should right-click the file and choose "Save as." Then you should choose a location where you can save the file to and you're finished.
I have deleted a lot of messages but I still seem to be over my quota! HELP!!
Be sure you empty your "Sent", "Draft" and then the "Deleted" folders to get everything. IF this still doesn't help call 2-3000.
Can I get my e-mail quota increased?
Sometimes. IT will increase the size of mailboxes under certain academic circumstances. Call 2-3000 for help with that.
What is the maximum size of an e-mail message I can send?
With your EKU e-mail account your message can only be 25MB (including the attachment).
I accidentally deleted some messages--can I get them back?
Check your "Deleted" folder. If you deleted them from there they are gone.
Why do I get messages replying to e-mails I never sent?
This is probably spam or Phishing. Ignore it and don't reply. See our spam FAQ for more information.
Why do messages from a particular sender always get put in my junk mail folder?
Some characteristics of these messages or the route by which they are being sent (e.g., via a "blacklisted" site) is resulting in them being assigned a junk-mail score higher than your junk-mail filter threshold.
How do I add an address to my address book?
In Webmail: Click the Contact button on the left. Click the New tab at the top of the messaging screen. Complete the information you want and click Save.
In Thunderbird: Click the Address Book button at the top. Click New Card. Complete the information and click OK.
How do I setup Outlook to check my student email account?
For the "Microsoft Exchange Server" name use this: stuowa.eku.edu

File Sharing (P2P)

What is file sharing?

File sharing is when you exchange files over the Internet. Some of the most popular ways include: (1) FTP programs, (2) IRC, and (3) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) software such as KaZaA, LimeWire, and BitTorrent.

Peer-to-Peer programs normally share files by default and will allow the maximum bandwidth available which can cause network problems.

It is ILLEGAL to download or share copyrighted files! These instructions are for the legal sharing of files! ResNet in no way endorses the use of file sharing software, which will not be supported by ResNet staff.

Can I disable file sharing?
You can in most P2P programs, but not all and this does not guarantee that they will not continue to share files. The only way to be sure is to remove the program.
Why is file sharing such a problem?
Most file sharing is against the law because it involved the distribution of copyrighted materials without permission from the copyright owner, usually music (MP3) or movie files, but also TV programs, books, and images. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has undertaken a campaign of suing people for downloading or uploading copyrighted material without permission. This effort often focuses on university students.
Can my port be deactivated?
If the university receives a copyright complaint about your file sharing activity, your port will be disabled and you will have to deal with Judicial Affairs before it can be reactivated.
What are early-settlement notices?
The university receives them from the RIAA. These are an offer to people who the RIAA believes are offering their copyrighted material for download to other users to settle out of court in lieu of a lawsuit.
Could I get sued?
Yes. The RIAA has sued over 18,000 individuals in the last few years for illegally sharing copyrighted materials.
Could filesharing get my computer infected with a virus or hacked?
Recent studies have shown that a large portion of files are infected with malware of some sort. If your computer is infected someone could access your personal information or use your computer to attach other computers, leaving only your IP address as the evidence for the authorities.
How does filesharing affect Internet speed?
When file sharing software is running on your computer you could have thousands of users connecting to your computer to download files from it. This slows down your computer and makes your internet connection slow to a crawl.
Is there a rule against filesharing on campus?
Yes. Use of any type of server software, including file sharing software, is against the ResNet Acceptable Use Policy. If you violate this policy your port will be disabled and you could face university judicial sanctions.
Are there free, legal alternatives to filesharing on campus?
Yes. You can use Internet radio such as Pandora.com or TV/Movie viewing sites like hulu.com. You can also use pay services such as iTunes.

Gaming

I want to play games on ResNet. Is that permitted?
YES! We do our best to open our residential network for most games/applications. There are, however, these constraints on the network: (1) Open outgoing ports only and (2) Incoming ports are blocked to keep the network secure and (3) Bandwidth hog applications are monitored and minimized.
Why can't I play certain games on EKU's server?
Game ports are open OUTGOING. Many INCOMING ports are closed on the campus (and residential network) because we don't want malicious attacks. You can request an incoming port be opened (to our email account) but we can't guarantee it. That decision is not ours to make. Either a port is not open or it requires an incoming port that we cannot open because of network security. If the game is new, e-mail us the port information and we'll look at the requirements and see if we can meet them: website for the game and a list of the ports required to play it.
I have an Xbox/PS3/Xbox 360/Wii. Can I connect it to ResNet?
Yes. Most common MAC addresses from these devices are already unblocked BUT, if you can't connect you will need to bring the MAC address (hardware address) of your machine to us. If it still doesn't work, we'll need to look at it in our office.
How can I find the MAC address to my game console?
Check out this page:
http://support.resnet.eku.edu/documents/gameconsole.pdf

IT Labs

How do I login in the IT labs?
You use your E-key username/password.
How do I get my USB jump drive to work?
If you cannot make your jump drive work, save your document/work to your W: drive. Restart the PC. Then your jump drive should work.
Do you have a floppy disk repair tool?

Yes. If you leave a floppy and your email address with us we can try to access files using our repair tool and email them to you. You can also download this program: FlopShow.

We recommend using your 1GB W: drive or a USB drive for saving files, however.

What are the lab hours?
Lab hours vary according to the lab/location and time of year. The most up-to-date hours are always posted on lab doors and online here:
IT Lab Hours
Are you open during the holidays?
The Combs 230 lab is not but our other IT labs have limited hours during the holidays. Check their doors for the most up-to-date hours.
Is it ok to bring children with me to the labs?
Remember that this is an academic setting so a certain amount of quiet is expected.
Where are STLs located and what are their telephone numbers?
*Student Services Building (SSB) - Room 160 - 859.622.8483
*Combs Classroom Building - Room 230 - 859.622.3050
*Library - Room 207 E - 859.622.8183
*Technology Commons Powell 13 - 859.622.2496
What is the policy on cell phones, food, and drinks in the labs?
Please leave cell phones on vibrate and take calls out in the hallway. We allow snack type foods and drinks with lids in the labs. Please alert the lab desk worker of spills.
Is there a lost & found? I left something in the lab!
Check with the personnel at a specific location for more information. Be able to describe the item and have a picture ID to identify yourself.
What if I send something to print but it doesn't work or messes up part of my print job?
Ask the personnel at the specific location for a refund form. NOTE: If anything printed you will be required to leave it with the refund form.
Where can I purchase a blank floppy or CD/R/RW?
Many labs have Computer Store vending machines that have these items in them for purchase. Prices range from .50 and up, depending on the media you wish to purchase. Please see the Computer Store for a refund, if required.
Why should I frequently save my documents while working in a lab?
You should save frequently (to YOUR USB thumb drive or W: drive) regardless of what you work. This way if something happens (e.g., the power goes out) you have at least some of your work saved. How often should you save? That depends on you. If you type really slow, for example, and are typing a 10 page paper, we would recommend saving every page. NEVER save to the actual computer's drives or desktop because once you logout or if the computer restarts, for example, the work is gone!
Where can I save my work?
DO NOT SAVE TO THE DESKTOP OR HARD DRIVE OF THE COMPUTER IN THE LAB. Once you logoff, that all disappears! We recommend saving to a USB thumb drive (jump drive) or your W: drive. Your W: drive is an area for your web page but you can also store other files there. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the lab computer. Look under "Network Drives" for a W: drive. That is your personal space.
Can I receive assistance if I am having trouble?
All STLs have attendants who can help you if a problem arises.

Passwords

Why should I care about my password?
Your computer passwords are extremely important! You should take them as seriously as you would your bank ATM PIN number as they guard a lot of personal information that can be used to steal your identity, for example.
But my e-mail isn't that important so why bother with a big password on it?
Your e-mail can also be used by spammers and phishers if you don't guard your password on it either.
How do hackers steal my passwords?
Weak passwords, unpatched operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh), and vulnerable running programs are often easily cracked. There are other ways to steal passwords: standing over your shoulder watching what you type or phishing.
What types of passwords are easily cracked?
Passwords generated by a password generator (hackers have these too!); using words found in the dictionary (forward or backwards); passwords written down; names of anything (e.g., places, people, animals, etc.); information known about you (e.g., your birthday, social security number, telephone number, boyfriend's name, etc.); all numbers or all letters especially repeating them over and over again; passwords shorter than 8 characters in length.
What are some rules for creating good passwords?
Make sure your password is 8 or more characters in length; use at least one character that is not a letter or number; use upper AND lowercase letters; create passwords you can remember and don't have to write down; use different passwords for all electronic items so if it is breached you don't loose them all at once; and use something you can type quickly so no one can watch you to learn what you're typing.
What are some helpful hints?
Change your passwords often (2-3 months); choose a line from a song or poem and turn it into a password with numbers and symbols ("Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered" becomes "OuAmdW1@p"); choose two short words that are not commonly connected and put them together with a number and symbol (e.g., Cup?lettR7"); and NEVER give your password to others (and if you do for technical support change it IMMEDIATELY after support ends!!).
Where can I change my password for my EKU e-mail account?
Bring a picture ID to our office in Combs 230 and we can do that for you. All passwords changes are securely filed in our office but we still suggest going into your Webmail and setting it again once you regain access to it!

Phishing & Identity Theft

What is phishing?
An e-mail that is used to collect personal and financial information from the recipient
How did they get my e-mail address?
Phishers use software to scour the Internet for e-mail addresses...bulletin boards, web pages, etc. It is always a good idea just to have a "dummy" e-mail that you use for non-important things so that it catches your spam. For example, get a Hotmail or Yahoo account for this purpose and only use your EKU e-mail account for academics & family.
If I get a suspicious e-mail what should I do?
First, your bank, Ebay, EKU, etc. are NOT going to ask for your passwords and account changes via an e-mail. Anytime you get an e-mail like this you should always contact the company first before doing anything. For example, if you get an e-mail that says your PayPal account is in jeopardy unless you login and reset your password, don't fall for it! This is a classic phishing con. Go to www.paypal.com and contact them via their telephone number before doing anything. NEVER click on a link in an e-mail like this. They take you to spoofed sites that will look just like the real thing but have a totally different URL/web address (e.g., an IP number).
I have fallen victim and sent my details to the phishers. What should I do now?
Contact the legitimate company as soon as possible! This happens to a lot of people so do not be too embarrassed to contact them to protect yourself! Also, check activity and balances on accounts too on the legitimate site ASAP.
What is pharming?
This is when a phisher uses things like Trojans or worms to attack your Internet browser address bar. You might type in a valid web address but the Trojan, for example, will redirect you to the phishers website instead.
What is identity theft?
This is where a criminal obtains personal information (e.g., social security number) to impersonate them. They often obtain credit cards or other services in the victims name.
What is keylogging?
A program or hardware device that monitors each keystroke of a user.
Who is vulnerable to phishing?
Everyone. Phishers thrive on using everything from your trust to their Trojans and worms to make these scams work.
How can someone steal my identity?
Easy. Phishing is just one way. There are also things like vishing (phishing on the telephone), stealing your mail from your mailbox, removing employer files, or dumpster diving (digging things out of your trash!). Invest in a shredder.
Why steal my identity? I don't have anything.
There are all sorts of reasons to steal someone's identity: apply for fake credit cards in your name and run up bills on them, steal money out of your bank account, commit other cyber-crimes, and other criminal activities like drug trafficking and money laundering.
What can I do to protect myself??
Never give out your Social Security Number unless it is absolutely necessary and don't carry your SS card with you; destroy unwanted credit card offers don't just throw them out; don't put anything personal on your checks other than your name and address and guard checks closely AND your ATM card and PIN numbers and deposit slips; buy a shredder and shred anything you throw out; never give out your personal information on the phone unless you initiated the call; review all monthly statements; watch for people watching you (at ATMs, standing in line at the supermarket, etc.) as it is very common for these people to look over your shoulder to memorize your information or take a picture with their cell phones; review your credit report yearly and if you are ever denied credit find out why; don't mail bills or documents with personal information from your home mailbox...take them to an official postal mailbox; check out all charges you didn't make; and BE ALERT! These people are praying being one step ahead of you and the fact that most people trust others way too much!

ResNet Connections

What is ResNet?
ResNet (residential networking) uses the student network designed and maintained by the Networking and Technical Support group in IT. Connections are provided to students living in the residence halls and Brockton. It provides students with a high-speed Internet connection in their room.
What does ResNet cost?
Nothing. There are no connection fees, no monthly fees and no support fees. The only cost(s) a student might incur would be if they need the Ethernet adapter for their computer and/or a CAT 5 cable.
How many data connections are available per room?
All residence halls will have two connections per room except in Brockton Apartments. Those rooms can be split IF there are two EKU students living there. Both roommates must be signed up for ResNet first. These splits are completed ASAP by our campus networking department.
Where is ResNet available?
Only in the residence halls, Brockton (married/single), and the ROTC house.
Is ResNet available during the summers?
Yes. ResNet is never turned off and you can have it as long as you're in the residence halls or Brockton at EKU.
Can I use a router or switch on ResNet?
No. That is a violation of our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Section V, Part 6. Also, any other defective, malfunctioning, compromised, or misconfigured equipment on the network will be disabled without prior notification.
What is the AUP and how does it effect me?
The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is the set of rules that govern EKU students network/Internet use, especially in relation to the residential network.
What do I need to connect?
Computer: You must have a computer that meets our minimum requirements. If your computer was purchased NEW less than 3 years ago, your hardware should be ok.
Operating System (OS): You must be running Windows Vista/XP/2000 or Mac OS X 10.3 or better.
Cabling: Since ResNet is NOT wireless, you will need a category 5 cable (we recommend 25') to hook to the jack in your room.
Antivirus: It is a requirement that you use EKU's version of Symantec AV.
OS Updates: If you are using Microsoft Windows or Apple you will need all critical and important updates.
Network login software: If you are using Microsoft Windows or Apple you will need to install Cisco Clean Access Agent to log in and out of the network with. If you are using a Linux computer you will just log in and out on a web page instead.

Spam

What is spam (unsolicited) e-mail?
Spam is any e-mail that is unsolicited. This does not include, however, administrative EKU e-mails sent to students. These e-mails are sent in order to keep students up-to-date, especially about important events and computer-related issues.
How did they get my e-mail address?
Spammers use software to scour the Internet for e-mail addresses...bulletin boards, web pages, etc. It is always a good idea just to have a "dummy" e-mail that you use for non-important things so that it catches your spam. For example, get a Hotmail or Yahoo account for this purpose and only use your EKU e-mail account for academics & family.
Why do I get an e-mail that isn't even addressed to me?
That is just a tactic spammers use to try to fool anti-spam filters. Don't fall for it and reply or hit "Unsubscribe" buttons or visit the website.
Should I "Reply to Remove" or "Unsubscribe?"
NO!! If an e-mail was from an unsolicited source this is just another tactic spammers use to get confirmation on a live e-mail account. This usually works to ensure that you will receive MORE spam.
Isn't spam illegal?
Not yet. There are some state that have passed legislation but they have not been very successful in fighting it because of the difficulty in finding actual sources.
Does EKU sell e-mail addresses?
No.
Does EKU have an anti-spam solution?
Yes and it is available here.
What if I get an unsolicited e-mail from someone else at EKU (@eku.edu)?
First it is against the rules of use for anyone to use their EKU e-mail account for advertising and profit. If the e-mail is like that you may report them to us. If it contains a strange attachment, don't open it! Many viruses attach themselves to e-mails and send themselves out. Or the e-mail could be forged. Always be cautious and report strange activity.

Spyware

What is spyware?

Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent.

While the term spyware suggests software that secretly monitors the user's behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring. Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, such as Internet surfing habit, sites that have been visited, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party. Spyware can even change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, different home pages, and loss of Internet or other programs. In an attempt to increase the understanding of spyware, a more formal classification of its included software types is captured under the term privacy-invasive software. [FROM: Wikipedia]

Is spyware legal?
Yes. In many cases you even agree to install it while installing a program and agreeing to the End User License Agreement (EULA).
Where does spyware come from?
*Many users install the software unknowingly because they never read the End User License Agreements (EULAs) when installing a program. You should read the entire EULA before you click "ok" or "continue" on the install of any software. If you have questions about the EULA you should email the company for clarification. *Some are installed because of your browser's vulnerabilities *Some are installed by clicking on a banner or a popup ad
What steps can I take to avoid spyware?
*Don't go to websites you don't trust
*Don't install software when you're unsure of what it is
*Programs like KaZaa or LimeWire and many other file trading programs install a huge amount of spyware--avoid installing them
*If a browser or instant messenger popup asks you to install software it's probably not a good idea to install it
*Download, install, keep updated and run weekly: Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE !!!!
What are symptoms of spyware?
*Homepage changes on its own
*Can't changes settings in your browser
*Your search results seem strange
*You have toolbars on your browser that you didn't install
*You are getting a lot more popups
*Your browser suddenly starts crashing
If spyware is removed, will it affect my other programs?
Maybe. Sometimes spyware is bundled with software and its removal will stop the program from working. This is especially true of many P2P programs like LimeWire.
What programs do you suggest for getting rid of spyware?
Spybot S&D, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, and SuperAntiSpyware. Find them on this site under "Downloads."
Will Symantec protect me?
While most AV software only look for viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, Symantec now looks for spyware and adware too! No AV program will automatically take care of all problems, however, because some malware is so malicious that it takes a lot of work removing them from computers. Some are so bad that they destroy file systems on computers and require reinstalls of the operating system.
Will a firewall protect me?
Yes and No. Most spyware comes via the web like other web traffic so firewalls usually let it in this way. Some firewalls can prompt you regarding software this it might try to load. So do you homework before you buy anything that promises miracles.

Symantec AntiVirus

How do I get NAV (EKU Symantec Antivirus) on my computer?
On-campus students: Download Here
Off-campus students: Pick up a copy at the EKU Computer Store in the SSB.

NOTE: UNINSTALL ALL ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE (ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS/SUITES) BEFORE INSTALLING EKU'S VERSION!
How do I uninstall my old antivirus programs/suites?
1. Open your "Control Panel."
2. Choose "Add/Remove Programs."
3. Locate what you want to uninstall, click on it and remove it. You will probably have to restart after uninstalling. If you have a suite on your computer, uninstall the antivirus program and firewall program BEFORE the security center piece.
How do I get rid of a virus?
Running a Scan
Where can I get the updated definition files from?

By using EKU's version of Symantec the definition files are automatically administered to your computer as long as you are attached to the residential network.

NOTE: When you go home in the summer, you will need to download and update your antivirus program weekly via the Symantec website:

Update
I already have Norton Antivirus, McAfee, etc. Can't I just use my software? Why do I have to use EKU's antivirus program?
When everyone uses our product, we can ensure that everyone has the latest updates (definition files) while connected to the residential network and these updates are free. Many other programs charge to keep you updated plus we found that many student computers would have the programs on the computer but would not be activated or kept up-to-date, making them worthless.
Can I run two virus scan programs on my Windows PC? Wouldn't it be even safer??
No. Running multiple applications like that can cause your computer to run slower and cause one or both programs not to work. Please remove any factory or self-installed antivirus software (including Firewalls and Security Suites) before you install EKU's version of Symantec. NOTE: Most factory installed AV software subscriptions expire unless you pay to keep them renewed. You don't have to pay to update Symantec.
I can't install Symantec. HELP!

FIRST, the uninstall password is: symantec

Secondly, if that's not the problem contact our office at 622-3050.

How do I use Symantec?
Check out our Symantec page here.
How do I manually update my Symantec software, say if I am home during the holidays or summer?
Open Symantec. Click on the "Live Update" button and follow the instructions. Your definition file should never be more than two weeks old. If it is and the "Live Update" option doesn't work, go to Symantec's home page to download the updates manually.

Viruses

What is a computer virus?
Viruses are programs that can easily effect your computer in many ways from simply being annoying to being highly destructive. They (1) have the ability to reproduce infecting other files or programs and (2) when run can carry out a range of annoying or damaging actions in your computer and across networks (including the Internet).
What are the symptoms and indications of a virus?
*Usually slow for no apparent cause such as having too many programs running at the same time or having a spyware problem
*Not being able to open certain files
*Missing files or folders
*Bogus warnings and unusual text messages displayed on the screen (jokes, obscenities, etc.)
*Sudden reduction in disk space or memory capacity
*Unexpected change in file properties
*File name changes unexpectedly
*Problems with starting the computer
*Computer shuts down suddenly for no apparent reason
*Program closes suddenly
*Other things such as the CD-ROM tray opening and closing by itself
How can I protect myself from viruses?
*Don't open files attached to an email address unless you know what it is and are expecting it--even if it is from someone you know!
*Always delete chain emails and junk emails--DO NOT reply to or forward this type of unsolicited mail as such action would contravene email etiquette and take up space on the network
*It is very important to update virus programs on your PC weekly
*You should always be cautious when downloading files from the Internet. If the website is a reputable site and you have to download the file then save it to a floppy or zip disk and scan it before you open it
*DO NOT click on links in instant messengers
*Always make backup copies of your files at regular intervals, and keep copies in a physical location separate from your computer
How can I get a virus?
*From removable media such as diskettes, CD-ROMS and DVDs
*Networks (many search for vulnerabilities so that is why you should always keep your software up-to-date)
*Internet (Instant Messenger programs such as AOL Instant Messenger, P2P downloads such as KaZaa and LimeWire, email or simply just browsing to shady sites)
Where do I get antivirus software from?

If you are an EKU student living on-campus you can download it here.

If you live off-campus you can get a copy at the computer store.

I think I got a virus--what should I do?
Use this guide to scan your computer.
Who do I call if I am unable to remove the virus myself?
If you live on-campus, you should call our office immediately at 622-3050! If you have already tried scanning on your own we will probably have you drop it off in our office.
How can I delete an infected file in quarantine?
Open Symantec. Open View on the left menu. Click Quarantine. All the files in Quarantine will show up on the list on the right. Click what you want to delete and then click the red X at the top of the list. Continue until finished.
How can I find out about the latest virus threats?
We will be posting the highest level threats on this site. However, if you want to know more about even the lower level threats you can check those out at Symantec's web site.

Web Publishing/W: Drive

Where do I start if I want my own web page at EKU?
First you have to create your web page/site. In the labs, save it to your W: drive. In your room, use the instructions below to FTP it to your space.
How much disk space do I have for my website?
1 GB
What is the web address (URL) of my web page?
Your page will be located here: http://studentweb.eku.edu/email username/ Where that URL says email username will contain your EKU email username, for example, jane_doe112. (http://studentweb.eku.edu/jane_doe112/)
Who can help me with my site?
You can contact our support desk if you need help uploading your site or finding it. You can find HTML help on the Internet. Just search in Google.
How do I publish my website?
1. Open My Network Places
2. On the left pane "Network task" there will be a number of tasks to choose from. Choose "Add a Network Place"
3. This will bring up a wizard that will help you add a network destination shortcut to your system.
4. Click next to get past the information prompt of the wizard.
5. The next page on the wizard will ask where you want to create a network place. Usually you will have two choices. "MSN Communities" & "Choose another network location". Choose the latter and click next
6. The next page will ask you for the address of this network place. Since we are accessing an ftp site we just enter in the URL of this ftp directory. The address for the student ftp directory is printed below.
ftp://ftp.studentweb.eku.edu
7. Click next after entering in the URL of the ftp directory.
8. The next page will ask you for your log in information for the student ftp directory. To enter in this information we uncheck the "log on anonymously checkbox" and enter in our EKU student e-mail user-name without the domain. Click Next
9. The next page will ask you for a name for your directory on your system. This will be all up to the student of course. I recommend "My Student Web Space" as the name. Click next.
10. After entering in this information you should receive a confirmation dialog on the wizard that will ask you if you want to view your newly created web space after clicking finish. This will be all up to the student as well. Once you click finish you are done.
11. Your student folder that now has a shortcut to your system can now be treated like any other directory. To navigate back to it just go back to Network Places and there it will be. To log in to your web space, open the directory and use your EKU E-key username and password and you have successfully logged in.

Windows Updates

Where can I get Windows updates?
You can download them here.
Why do I have to constantly update Windows?
No software program is without flaws and Microsoft Windows is no different. All programs have updates but because of the size of the operating system and it's common use, the need for updates occur more often than for other lesser known programs. Updates are released at least once per month and may or may not effect your particular system. Once a certain number of updates are released they release a service pack that includes all updates and more.
What is Windows Update?
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows designed to help your computer continue to work better and run better. Windows Update has a central catalog called Product Updates that includes new product enhancements such as system files, device drivers, service packs, and new Windows features. These enhancements will be recommended to you based on what is needed for your specific computer. (FROM MICROSOFT)
I use Firefox (or another browser other than Internet Explorer). Do I still have to get these updates? I also have Windows XP or Vista.
Yes. You have to use Internet Explorer to get Microsoft Windows updates if you use Windows 2000 or XP. If you use Vista you can use another browser.
When I click on Windows Update I get a message saying ACCESS DENIED on the screen and I am not able to proceed.
Be sure you have administrative access to your PC. If so try resetting your security settings:
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
2. Type secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose, and then press ENTER. You receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message.

NOTE: %windir% should be the location of your Windows folder (e.g., c:\windows
There are a lot of different things available to download at the Windows Update site. How do I know which to choose?
Be sure to download and install all Critical Updates and Recommended Updates.
How often should I use Windows Update?
We recommend checking for updates every two weeks. However, as long as you are on the residential network, Cisco Clean Access (CCA) will prompt you when you are missing updates.
Is there a way for me to automate the process?
You can turn on automatic updates.
XP:Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon (or click on Performance and Maintenance then the System link). Click the Automatic Updates tab and then click on the following option: Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed. This will cause them to download quietly and give you a prompt by your clock in the lower-right hand of your screen prompting you to install them.
2000: In Control Panel, double-click Automatic Updates. Click on the following option: Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed. When downloads are ready to install you'll see an icon near your clock. Simply double click it and install the updates.

Wireless Connections

What is wireless?
Wireless networking is the ability of computing devices to communicate on a network without a physical connection, like a Category 5 cable. EKU's wireless network uses 802.11b and 802.11g Wi-Fi.
What are the benefits of using it?
Using the wireless network gives laptop users the ability to move around campus and still using computing resources.
Is ResNet wireless?
No. There are many wirelss access points (APs) however in many of our academic and administrative buildings.
What are the specifications to getting connected on the wireless network?
For the latest requirements and connection rules go to the Wireless Website.
Where can I use the wireless connection on campus?
Most academic and administrative buildings have wirless access and in the Fall 2008 IT will begin putting wirless into the residence halls a few at a time until all of them are wireless too! Check this site for more information.
Can I connect my PDA?
Not yet. At this time only PCs with the specifications listed above may connect.
Where can I find more information?
Check out the Wireless Networking page for more information.

Wiring (Checks/Splits)

How long does it take to get a wiring check/split?
Once a split or check request is submitted they close the ticket as soon as possible. When you call/stop by to open a wiring ticket please give us this information so that it makes contacting you easier for the wiring team and quicker for you: Your name, your roommates name, hall, room number, phone number(s) - room and cell, and times when someone will be available in your room for them to contact you.
My computer works on my roommates jack, but doesn't on mine.
Call our office at 622-3050.
Do I have to buy a splitter or will ResNet put one in for me if I don't have a roommate?
All rooms in the residence halls have two connections. We will split any Brockton apartment that has two EKU students living in it.
Why can't I use a router or switch on ResNet?
These network devices can interrupt ResNet service for entire sections of residence halls and are not permitted on our residential network. If found, they will be disconnected without prior notice.
Since I can't get wireless access in my hall, can I use a wireless router?
No. These fall under the category of router or switch and are not permitted either.
