"Final Verification of Your Email Account" Phishing Scheme

There is another phishing email spreading through EKU email accounts that you should be aware of. The Subject line is: FINAL VERIFICATION OF YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT. DO NOT click on anything or reply to this message! Delete it immediately. If, on the other hand, you have replied, change your email password immediately by logging into your account and clicking the "Options" button.

NOTE: As of Monday morning we have yet another scam with the subject line: "WebNews Email Account Update." This is also phishing so ignore and delete it.

    Server Upgrades During Spring Break

Two upgrades/outages: (1) Sunday, March 9 from 6:30-8 p.m. there will be a data center outage for networking maintenance so all services will be unavailble (EKUDirect, Email, Blackboard, Clusters, etc.) Also (2) During Spring Break week, possibly Monday, the clusters will be down in the hall lobbies for a 2-hr upgrade.

Student Email Upgrade During Spring Break

Beginning on Monday, March 10th IT will begin the process of upgrading student email accounts to the new Exchange 2007 system. They anticipate having all mailboxes moved no later than Friday, March 14th. During this period acess to your mail could be unavailable to you until the move is complete. Email flow will not be disruppted during the time period. Click for additional information.

    Email Addresses

As of August 2007 users can no longer change their email addresses in Blackboard because they want everyone to use their EKU address for all academic correspondence. If you have any questions regarding this policy, feel free to email them at: onlinelearning@eku.edu.

    Outage

Starting this Saturday 2/16 from 6 a.m. to Sunday 2/17 at 6 p.m. and this will affect Banner production and all associated systems: Eprint; EKU Direct Online; Boss Cars

    Valentine's Day Viruses

Beware of virus outbreaks on or around holidays such as Valentine's Day! So if you get messages today with subject lines such as "I Love You," "You Stay in My Heart," "A Rose to Say...," etc. beware of opening any attachments (including images) with said message. In fact, we suggest contacting the sender to be sure they actually sent the message before opening it. This also applies to clicking on links in these messages too! Have a nice Valentine's Day!

    Bogus EKU Email Notification

Subject Line: "Verify Your EKU Account Now"
Contents: Asks for your account information (a perfect example of phishing spam)
Fix: If you complied with this email, you need to reset your password IMMEDIATELY at one of these sites:
    Faculty/Staff: https://ekeyreset.eku.edu
    Students: https://student.ekeyreset.eku.edu

    PowerPoint 2007 and Blackboard Issues

Issue: PowerPoint 2007 users are experiencing some difficulty when opening older versions of PowerPoint files (particularly files with the .ppt extension). When the user opens the file directly from a website the program opens up the document and is only able to view a blank page. This is not an issue with the document or the website, it is a known issue with PowerPoint 2007 and has been corrected in the "2007 Microsoft Office Suite SP1" Update.
    Fix: Install SP1 -OR-
Choose to download the document instead of directly opening the file. To download, right-click and choose "Save As."

EKU Final Spam Totals for 2007

The EKU AntiSpam solution has been hard at work for the past year:

    • Total outside mail received--108,843,423
    • Total mail pass to clients from anti spam filters--35,151,401
    • Total spam captured--73,692,022
    • Total virus removals--2,039,107

The AntiSpam solution is available to all EKU students, faculty, and staff. You can login with your regular email username and password.

This is the page you'll see when a page is blocked because it contains known spyware/virus. If something "legitimate" is being blocked by this system, however, use the "Contact Us" link on the blocked page to let us know.

    Closed from December 15, 2007 through January 8, 2008. For assistance call 622-3000. We re-open on January 9th at 8 a.m.

    Daylight Savings Time

Beginning this year there will be changes to the Daylight Savings Time (DST) calendar we're all use to. The U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005 has extended DST in the U.S. by approximately four weeks. This means that this year, DST will start three weeks earlier on March 11, 2007 and end one week later on November 4, 2007.

What does this mean to you and your computer? Unless you apply certain updates, it is possible that the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during this four week period. To fix the problem for Windows systems go here. To update Apple Macintosh computer go here.

Restart your computer. Wait 15 minutes then try to login again. This has been fixing the problem for our users. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Update, 3:38 p.m. See fix in paragraph above! Active Directory settings were destroyed this weekend and rolled-back so that's why this is causing a problem for some of our users.

Starting on Wednesday, November 22 if you're still on campus you may experience some disruptions in ResNet service because we will be upgrading servers during this time. We don't look for disruptions to be long and thank you for your patience while we make our services better for you! ALSO NOTE: We're closed Wednesday, November 22 until Monday, November 27 at 8 a.m.

    Firefox 2.0

The newest version of the Firefox browser can be downloaded here. We've also updated our installation instructions and included a 2.0 changes pdf. The configure instructions cover the previous version and they are so similar that we have not updated that document yet. NOTE: Security issues when used with Linux.

    Mobile Malware

Thanks to the lastest strides in mobile phone technologies these fixtures of everyday life are now victims of malware. Like your computer you should safeguard yourself while using these devices. You should exercise caution when accepting application or opening attachments and don't accept content from unknown sources!

According to the IDC 50 million smartphones have been sold and 40-50% of those are Nokia. Nokia runs under Symbian, the most popular operating system for mobile malware. Of these smartphones the majority support the object Transfer Function which helps spread malware.

    Instant-Messaging attacks rose in 2005 and 2006!

A study published by FaceTime Communications shows that security attacks over instant-messenging networks (i.e., MSN, AOL IM, etc.) has risen from 2004 to 2005. Akonix Systems also reported that in August 2006 there was a 200 percent increase in the number of IM vulnerabilities!

Moral of this story: Don't trust things you receive while chatting online...links, files, etc. Be cautious because an IM virus uses your trust of the other people on your buddy list to attack you!
